Spring/Summer 2013 Trend Report: Make Up

March 28, 2013 | Basma Shiha
Spring/Summer 2013 Trend Report: Make Up

Spring/ Summer fashion weeks were all about colorful, vibrant and natural makeup looks. Forget the thin, perfectly round brows and the obsession with matte skin; this season’s highlight is all about smooth, glowing skin paired with 1990’s bold eyebrows.

And just when you began perfecting the cat-eye eyeliner, also known as the Adele look, the trend has wore off in favor for a younger, fresher and more casual look. Colored eyeliner and eye shadow inspired by beach colors were staples on most fashion shows.

Also, forget every tip your mother gave you about not overdoing your eyes if you’re wearing colored lipstick. This season is all about red, pink and nude lipsticks paired with long, thick lashes.

BOLD EYEBROWS

Bold eyebrows appeared on most top designer fashion shows, inspired by the 1960’s and the 1990’s. We’re definitely thankful to finally be able to ditch our weekly eyebrow appointments, one of the few appointments Egyptians religiously keep.

Editor’s tip: Use eyebrow powder, not a pencil, to enhance natural brows by filling between hair and defining shape. It could be used in dark brown or black according to brows’ natural color and gives a far more natural look than the pencil could.

Eyeliners this season are inspired by beach colors. Aqua      blue, aqua green and white eyeliners are in vogue, used either on the water line or on the upper lid line for a more daring look.

Editor’s tip: Use white eyeliner with vibrant lipstick colors like pink, red and orange or pair it with a nude shade. Use green or blue eyeliner with nude lipstick for a fresh summery look.

It’s all about skin this summer. Ditch last season’s matting powder and embrace the glow, a lovely summer trend that screams summer is in. Glowing skin enhanced though natural make up is all the rage now.

Editor’s tip: The all-natural make up trend this summer, made even sexier with a summer tan, can be achieved through pairing a glowing skin with bold eyebrows, thick, long lashes, white eyeliner, nude lipstick and light peach or rose blusher.

Editor’s tip: Use illuminating powders like MAC “iridescent loose powder” or Chanel “illuminating powder” for a moderate skin glow.

METALLIC SHADOWS

Silver, blue and green metallic shadows were staples for many designers this season, including the likes Gucci, Chanel and Christian Dior. Dior even took it a bit further with “jeweled lids,” embellishing models’ eyelids with small studs to top off the metallic, colorful shadows.

LUSCIOUS LASHES

The iconic Souad Hosni lusciously elongated, thickened and overall gorgeous lashes are making a strong come back. Long, thick lashes look amazing with all summer looks. It can be achieved through volume and length-enhancing mascaras or you can go the extra mile and use fake lashes.

Editor’s tip: A personal favorite is Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Mascara. It comes with an unconventional brush; a round mascara wand that has been proven to reach every single lash for the perfect curling and separation.
