Spring/Summer 2013 Trend Reports: Hair
April 11, 2013 | Nadine El Sayed 1We love Spring/Summer 2013 trends, we do because there is simply something there for every taste. From the retro chic, to the simplicity of poker straight or wet look hair, the season carries versatile hairstyles that will not leave us bored in less than a month.
Our personal favorites are the retro glamour up-dos and bobs as well as the edgy and pixie cuts rocked by pop stars and frowned upon by long-hair-loving Egyptian mommas.
There are, however, plenty of trends to choose from, so do share your favorites with us and we will give you our secrets on how to pull them off.
Who knows, we might even get our friends at Mohamed El Sagheer to share a tutorial video detailing how to pull off the most popular trend amongst our readers.
Poker Straight:
Poker straight hair is a classic look, but sadly, with the summer heat and Egyptian genes, only a few of us can pull it off. If you werent blessed with straight hair and do not want to opt for a perm, invest in a quality hair straightener, the likes of BabyLiss and Chi.
You can also use straightening shampoos or anti-frizz, we recommend Lee Stafford Poker Straight hair shampoo, conditioner and anti-frizz spray, all available at Boots in the UK and the UAE. The combo has worked wonders for me on a hot, moist day at the amusement park. Alternatively, you can try anti-frizz Chi products, available at many hairdressers and opt for an anti-heat treatment to protect your hair against damages done by flattening irons. Start off with any anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner, straighten and spray to tame any frizzes. You can also use a small amount of serum, the likes of Frizz Ease or Tigi Bed Hair After Party, for extra shine and manageability.
Summery Mess:
Remember when you had to fight with your mother for that extra gulp of gel which kept her yelling that it will make your hair fall out by the age youre 30? Well, if you have, in fact, turned 30 and are looking back at the teenage years with a smirk, think again, wet look is back in fashion and you might just have the same quarrel with your conscience.
Now we beg of you, do not go back to using that gel you fought with your mom over, she did have a point there and its over 15 years later so science has invented oh-so-many other products to give the same effect. Try a treatment oil or a serum, using a little more than you normally would to achieve a wet look without damaging your hair. Alternatively, you can use mousse or gels for special occasions and for less-wet and sleeker looks try hairspray.
Go for the sophisticated wet look smoothing your hair back if you have short hair or holding it in a wet ponytail if you have longer hair. You can also try scrunching it and pulling it back in a messy bun to combine two trends in one do.
Gather it up:
Be it the messy bun that has been with us for the past two seasons or a low, messy pony tail, this season is all about getting creative with your up-dos. Keep it messy and fluffy, leave out some strands or top the look off with a funky hairband for a cooler look (as shown in the pictures.)
Make an inverted braid and pair it up with the bun for a night out, play around with pins or braids and tuck all your hair up a hairband or simply gather it all up in a low pony tail and roll a strand around the top to cover up the elastic band.
Editors tip: This trend is especially useful for bad hair days, if you dont have time for a good wash, opt for an up-do and ease your hair up from the roots by using a comb to have a fluffier updo or use hairspray for special occasions.
Here’s our step by step tutorial on how to style your own bun with just a hair doughnut and no pins:
Tuck it back:
Tucking hair strands back behind your ear, leaving one strand from the front out is a winner this season.
Retro hair:
Hair was simply beautiful in the 1960s, and gladly, the designers brought the trends back. From luscious waves and bouffant hair (puffed up) to beautifully styled bobs and side sweeps with little, cutesy ribbons, the 1960s hair style book is back on, full power.
Fold up a scarf and use it as a hairband, you can team it up with a teased bob and a side-swept lock of hair that gives the effect of a fringe or pair it up with a messy puffed up-do like we did with the bun. Scarves and bands are versatile and essentials in retro looks, they are also very fashionable this season, so get your hands on your mothers 1960s collection of scarves.
Fringe:
This is not your 2007s Goth fringe every girl, no matter what her cut or hair type was, rocked. Fringes this season vary from the short, pixie geek-chic to a thick one grazing the eyebrows.
You can try it with messy-looking curls and waves for a carefree hobo-chic, with a well-cut, straight bob or a wavy bob with a side fringe pinned down or even tucked neatly behind your ear with an elegant, poufy up-do highlighted with this seasons must have hair accessories.
Braids:
Braids are in. All kinds, all looks, all colors and all lengths, from neat ones to the messier Greek-island inspired braids, every fashion board on Pinterest has at least a dozen of ideas that incorporate a braid. Braids can be the main hairstyle or an element in an updo, keeping wavy, unkempt hair out of your face or framing straight, sleek hair framed by a tiny braid that is acting as a hairband.
Here’s our step by step tutorial to styling your own fishtail braid:
The colors:
Forget dip-dyes and ombre, yes, they are still en vogue, but even more fashionable are pastels and grey. Yes, we finally have a reason to celebrate grey hair well, technically its more silver-ish hair that is in style, but close enough. Go for more daring pastels if you can and you get extra fashion forwardness bonus points.
Chop it off:
Carrying on from last season, pixie haircuts, punk styles and the side shaves are still pretty much in fashion. Seen on many stars last year, including Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Ema Wattson, the look has gained popularity that secured it a place in this seasons hairstyles.
