7 Hot Drinks to Keep you Warm

Our homes aren’t exactly equipped for the cold season — and that’s because we rarely ever get a cold season, really. But we’re faced with ice-cold floors, a breezy living space and freezing extremities in homes almost as cold as the outdoors.

So here are a few drinks that can actually help keep you warm; and no, alcohol isn’t one of them.

Trust us on that one, contrary to popular belief, alcohol does not make your body warmer. Alcohol causes your blood vessels to dilate which makes blood closer to the surface of your skin, you become flushed and are tricked into thinking your body is warmer. What is happening is that heat is actually escaping your body as opposed to being trapped inside your core and so you’re losing your body heat.

Instead, here are seven drinks that actually help keep you all warm and toasty:

1. Cinnamon Tea: Cinnamon is great for your blood circulation, which means it will definitely make you warmer. Before you’ve finished your cup we promise you will feel warmer and human again. We recommend Isis’s cinnamon tea or cinnamon and ginger mix.

2. Hot Chocolate: If ever there was a time for hot chocolate it is this weekend. Hot chocolate keeps you warm, but it also gives you the energy you need on a cold day. Cocoa is packed with antioxidants and is beneficial for your heart and brain. Opt for dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa) like Heinz and sweeten to taste with honey. For a richer taste add hot milk, not water, and if you truly want to indulge top it off with some whipped cream. Try this luscious recipe classic recipe or spice it up and add even more warmth and make mexican hot chocolate using this recipe, which uses a pinch chili that is bound to get the blood in your veins all warm and fuzzy.

3. SahlabThe traditional Sahlab is great for your blood circulation and will keep you warm and give you energy when drunk with hot milk.

4. Sage (Marmareya): Sage is also a great way to spike up black or green tea. It will add a lot of taste to it and will also help warm you up and give you an immunity boost.

5. Hot Lemon and Ginger Tea: This is not only great for a little warmth, but it is also a natural immunity  booster to fight against cold. Squeeze a lemon and add two teaspoons of honey and a dash of ginger and drink up. You can also throw in a cinnamon stick in there to keep you warmer.

6. Chai Late: Chai Late is a great way to enjoy coffee in winter time and it is actually very easy to make. Try this recipe and enjoy your afternoon coffee at home.

 7. Apple Cider: It’s a winter — and Christmas— staple and it will warm all of your senses. It is also packed with the nutrients of apples and cinnamon so you can’t really go wrong there. Try this recipe.
