Tampons: Friends or Foe?

May 26, 2013 | Nadine El Sayed

Dr. Gohar: Of course not, this is just part of the whole obsession about virginity but this one is definitely a myth. Tampons cannot break hymens and they are perfectly safe for virgins.

The warnings on the box indicate that we need to be careful with choosing the right size for the flow, is it dangerous to apply those with greater absorbency?

Dr. Gohar: This is just something they have to write on the box. Tampons come in different sizes because the size and tone of the vagina is different from one person to the other, someone who has been sexually active for years, for instance, is different than someone who only had intercourse a few times or a mother. So it is a matter of personal need and comfort that indicates which size is more suitable. People exaggerate and make a fuss around all of this but tampons are rather simple. Producers just write these warnings much like any other medicine where they need to write warning labels, even with vitamins, this is mostly to protect the company from any sort of possible liability.
